Welcome to The Excellent Elephant Class!

Mrs Molloy and Mrs Hopkinson are really excited to be teaching Year 1/2 and have a fantastic year full of interesting topics planned! Our Topic for Summer Two is 'Beside the Seaside', which focuses on identifying seaside resorts, looking at the human and physical features there and comparing the seaside from the past to how it is now.  


We'll be using this website to share lots of information with children and parents, including galleries showcasing our learning, letters and calendar dates. 



  • Children will gather and sort data on their favourite seaside destinations
  • They will apply knowledge of money through a seaside souvenir shop / ice cream parlour
  • Children will solve beach themed word problems applying a range of operations
  • They will use timetables to help them plan journeys on public transport.


  • Individual Liberty- where would you choose to go on holiday?
  • Looking after the environment e.g. taking rubbish home etc.


  • Non-Fiction: Children will write instructions on how to make a sandwich, holiday postcards, a recount of a trip to seaside, explanation texts
  • Narrative: Children will retell story- Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch
  • Poetry: Seaside / rock pool themed poetry
  • Descriptive: Setting descriptions, character descriptions based on key texts
  • Children will compare the seaside then and now
  • Use different sources of information
  • They will place events and artefacts in chronological order
  • What did children do at the seaside in the past?

Beside the Seaside




  • This half term children will create own sandwich for the Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. Link to Science- balanced diets; did Mr Grinling eat a healthy diet?


Science – Plants
  • Children will identify things that are living, dead or have never lived (beach objects)
  • They will match living things to the correct habitats
  • The children will recognise how living things live in habitats to which they are suited to.


  • Digital postcards
  • Research sea creatures
  • Watch clips of the seaside in the past
  • Create a poster about taking rubbish home


  • Children will research features of the British seaside, food, postcards, crabbing etc.
  • Chn will explore human and physical features of the seaside using appropriate vocabulary.
  • They will create their ideal seaside by creating their own map and applying map symbols.
  • They will explore different jobs found in this location
