Welcome to The Excellent Elepahnt Class!

Mrs Molloy and Mrs Hopkinson are really excited to be teaching Year 1/2 and have a fantastic year full of interesting topics planned! Our Topic for Autumn Two is 'Fire Fire!', which focuses on developing our history skills through studying The Great Fire of London.  

 

We'll be using this website to share lots of information with children and parents, including galleries showcasing our learning, letters and calendar dates. 

 

Mathematics

  • Children will apply their knowledge of days of the week, months of the year, time and positional language to different problems e.g. opening times of the Pudding Lane Bakery, planning an escape route from a fire.
  • Children will solve problems applying a range of operations e.g. transporting boat loads of people across the River Thames to safety.

PSHE

  • Rule of Law- How to keep themselves safe
  • Children will learn about fire safety

Literacy

  • Non-Fiction: Design a fire safety poster (link to ICT), Diary entry for Samuel Pepys, Newspaper article on the Great Fire of London
  • Narrative: Character description (The Rabbit Who Stole the Fire), Recount of events in first person
  • Poetry: Firework poems, shape poetry
  • Descriptive: Using senses to describe the fire
History
  • Children will use different sources of evidence e.g. pictoral and recounts to make inferences and deductions about the events
  • Compare the skyline of London in 1666 and today.
  • Timeline of events of The Great Fire in chronological order

D&T

  • This half term children will create own model Tudor houses to help them understand how The Great Fire of London spread so easily. (Link to Materials in Science)

 

Science – Materials

 

  • Children will investigate properties of materials, identifying manmade / natural materials
  • They will identify similarities and differences between materials and group them accurately
  • Compare materials used today to materials used to build houses in 1666

Computing

  • Use Pic-Collage to design a fire safety poster
  • Research
  • Retell story of the Great Fire of London using Adobe Spark

Geography

 

  • Children will locate London on a map of the United Kingdom
  • They will name capital cities of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland
